Python Meo remote control

Just finished a script to remote control Meo box.
It's in python.

7 s.connect((HOST, PORT))

Haiku on EEE 704

Just tried Haiku OS on my desktop and on my laptop, it still needs a lot of work but is looking very good, boots very fast (like BeOS) but hardware support is missing (wireless).
But the question on my mind was: Since it boots so fast and look very lightweight... will it run on my EEE 704 pc? Currently is running Ubuntu netbook remix, with 1GB ram.
I didn't want to remove the Ubuntu on the SSD, so I just put Haiku on a flash drive.
It looks promising, it feels very good, to bad neither the wireless and the Ethernet adapter worked, maybe on the next release...

Who's got Shop?!

Now that even Windows Mobile has a App Store, it almost comes with no surprise that the new, soon to be released Ubuntu Karmic Koala, has one:

I must say, this is the first time I see a desktop operating system with this feature.
Or NOT, after all what is apt-get? Well, even Synaptic Package Manager wasn't very user friendly...
Making the system provide a group of supported applications always been the "linux way" of installing new programs, these being on official repositories, gives the users some comfort security wise. If the program is not in the repositories... then you're out of luck.
So, not really anything new to us geeks, we'll still be droping to the terminal to install our applications... But is still nice to show of this new feature.

Another one bites the dust

I use Google reader, i use it a lot, so much that I am cutting down on my feeds :) takes ten times more times to read all the feeds than my mail :).
This one post on dig got me thinking....
A little background before:
How many company's have seen some form of their products being included in Windows X(*)?:
1 - Internet browser
2 - Firewall
3 - Malware remover
4 - partition software

Well, maybe more... and some of my choices are debatable, but one must think:

1 - If comes with the system why buy another product?
2 - The system provides only the basic operations for these applications

Looks like Microsoft, will be closing more Software companies: Microsoft will soon unveil free anti-virus software. This being true who will need to actually buy this software anyway? Not home users ....

Again, sure it will be a basic feature, but it is one less product that other software companies will sell...

One can argue that MS, it's only making their system more secure, which means it's not as secure as they say on each product launch, and we don't see Linux distributions (you can insert MAC os's here too) coming out with firewall/malware/anti-virus pre-installed?! That really talks a lot about these system security.

(*) x stands for 3.1,95,2000,XP,Vista all the server ones ...
PS:Lol 3 post in one day ...

Song bird + Daap + Firefly

Who doesn't a have a huge collection of music in all your computers at home?
I was tired of copying, or pointing my media players to some shared folder on the network.
Lately i started using Songbird to listen to all my music.
But, keeping my media synced in all computers/platforms was a pain, so i used my Mac Mini Ubuntu server to run Firefly a Media server, that uses the DAAP protocol it is a protocol used by Apple, but hey! who uses Itunes anyway?! (hint: not me).
Instead one can use the SongBird plugin Songbird Daap Client to the same effect.
As the protocol uses broadcast, Songbird will pickup servers on your current network.
Firefly can be customized to use playlists, through it's own Web UI. (RTFM)
Problem solved :)

E3 thoughts

Two games caught my attention in all the E3 Videos:
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories:

It's coming up on the WII, this is the type of title that totally works on the platform. My favorite WII game is Resident Evil 4, though it is a Game Cube remake, I've never played it before, and I just had to finish it! An lately no game has made me want to go to the last final level....
Seems like a horror movie, and the number of games that can put fear to the gamer are a only few...

And Splinter Cell: Conviction:

Reminds me a little of Las vegas 2, i Think it is the same game engine. This one takes it a little forward, the "mark and execute" is just beautiful :) i wonder if it kill the marked targets automatically or not... when Sam executes the "mark and execute" it's like you are in a movie just excellent. Another cool Tom Clancy game.

Windows 7 = Vista

I've been test-driving Windows 7 on my laptop, in one disk that I have putted away.
The first impression was good, besides all the eye candy, which is nice, it really felt a little less bloated than the usual Vista.
It has this new "super taskbar" which changes a little the taskbar functionality for the best.

I felt so comfortable with it that I installed my last purchased game: Rainbow Six Las vegas 2, that i bough on Steam (on sale :) ). And then it happen, the Vista flashbacks:

I can't go online with my laptop if i connect it through the Ethernet cable!? It works flawlessly if i connect through the wireless?!
After going over all the firewall settings (which are numerous), i could not connect through Ethernet, even if I disabled the firewall.
I have some friends with Vista that have the same problem in reverse.

It's my guess that Vista and it's brother 7, differentiate the two connections to which level, still eludes me.

Windows 7 the good:
  • Felt more lightweight (almos like Windows XP)
  • Nice eye candy
  • Taskbar with no labels ( i use my windows xp taskbar on the right of the screen, cutting the labels too, unfortunately windows 7 taskbar on the right looks bulky)
  • Game performance is better than Vista, but not as good as in XP (Rainbow Six Las vegas 2 )
The bad:

  • Unexplained connection problems: Can connect through wireless but not Ethernet?!
  • Can't access OSX Leopard "windows" shares (protocol change? Does not accept previous version of the protocol)
  • Huge control panel
  • disperse network settings, even redundant (you can go to the same settings in 5 different ways)
I putted back my original disk in my laptop, and tried to reproduce the connection problem (to discard little green leprechauns on my home router), but XP (Las vegas game) connected flawlessly from wireless and Ethernet (after all they are the same network).

Don't fool yourself, Windows 7 in side it's all Vista . And of course it's a Beta, but this excuse works both ways: They haven't shoved all the functionality/bloatness/DRM manager in to the OS.

Msn protocol change

Yes, it's one of those days.

Pidgin can't connect to the MSN network, Microsoft must have changed the protocol and left 3rd party applications in the cold (again).
Some error like: "Unable to retrieve MSN Address Book".

There is on quick solution however: something called msn-pecan
